What is the best fishing lure in the world? I have wondered that many times during my years of fishing. I have finally came up with my conclusion. The best fishing lure in the world is a jig. Here are the reasons why:
Jigs are simple. It’s just a hook, a weight, and some sort of “tail” that gives the jig action as it moves through the water.
Jigs are cheap. Due to their simplicity, jigs are cheap to buy. They are probably the cheapest type of lure out there. You don’t have to worry about loosing your $ 0.75 jig like you would with a $15 crank bait.
Jigs come in many sizes and variations. You can find jigs that look like just about anything. I have seen jigs that imitate bugs/flies, baitfish, crayfish, leeches, frogs, lizards, and more. You can find them in thousands of different color combinations. They have tiny 1/80 oz. jigs for catching panfish and large 1 oz. jigs for catching lunker bass.
Jigs are easy to make. All you need is a jig head and some feathers, hair, and/or soft plastic lure. You can even make your own jig heads by pinching a split shot weight onto a long shank hook.
Most important of all: Jigs are effective. They will catch just about any fish. If a fish will attack a lure, you can catch it on a jig. This includes trout, bass, pike, musky, crappie, panfish, and more. In my personal experience, jigs can easily out fish different types of lures. Jigs are my lure of choice. I always try fishing with a jig before experimenting with other lures. Yes, they are that good!
Do you agree?
I just learned about jigs this winter, so I haven’t had a chance to try them. I’m looking forward to spending time with them this Spring and Summer.
My favorite lure is the Zoom Super Fluke. I mainly target bass with them, but have also caught Northern Pike, Muskie, and Walleye. They are a great all-purpose lure. I wrote a post about it called, The Magic Lure: Link.
I rig it Texas style: Link
