The best monofilament lines could be considered the perfect blend of invisibility, and stretch, to provide ultralight anglers with a line that is both durable, and helps resist line breaking runs from bigger fish. There are 4 main manufacturers of mono line that I know I can personally rely on when I’m ready to respool my reels. Chances are, you’ve probably used these lines before. If you haven’t, you may owe it to yourself to give them a shot the next time you have to tie new line onto your ultralight combo.
Berkley Trilene XL Smooth Casting Line
Berkley has built up a name for themselves in the fishing industry because they consistently put out quality products that are priced for anglers on a budget. Their Trilene XL smooth casting line is perfect for ultralight reels because it is both limp, and has extremely low memory retention, making your casts effortless. The design of the XL Smooth Casting line helps ensure you are dealing with less line twisting, and fewer kinks, while getting a good abrasion resistance to prevent breaking off your pricey lures.

P-Line CXX X-tra Strong Monofilament
P-Line’s CXX X-tra Strong Monofilament is a blessing for ultralight bass anglers. The moss green color provides the right amount of visibility above the water, while still keeping the line from being seen underneath the surface. The crystal clear color is excellent when you’re dealing with clear water situations. P-Line manufacturers their CXX mono with a coating that makes it extremely abrasion resistant, with a high breaking strength, but also manages to keep its limp properties to prevent it from retaining a memory around your spool.

Stren Original Monofilament
Stren is another company that built their name by putting out high quality products at prices that all anglers could afford. If you asked Bill Dance what his favorite line was, he’d tell you the Original Stren monofilament. Their Original Mono currently holds the IGFA word record for a 573 pound Blue Marlin. While you may never attempt to catch a fish that big on ultralight line, it’s good to know that their products have the capability, and properties you need to keep from having to worry about the line you’re using.

Spiderwire Super Mono EZ Monofilament
I love SpiderWire’s products. Their 4lb test lines are excellent on ultralight gear. The new EZ mono is 25% stronger than their original mono, while keeping the same diameters and controlled stretch properties. If you’re having problems feeling the bites from smaller fish, and still want a line that will be able to control, and move much larger fish, the Spiderwire EZ Mono is the line that you have been looking for. It is incredibly limp, easy casting, and provides just enough stretch to maintain strong knot holds and keep from breaking so you can tighten down your drag that much more.
